The first school on Saturna was built in 1919 under great difficulties, as the lumber for it had to be hauled over rough trails by horse and wagon. Another problem that arose was over the site for the school. It was solved by starting two persons to walk from either end of the island. Where they met was the chosen place! Now, there is a modern two-roomed school at Lyall Harbour, and a teacherage.
